DESCRIPTION:

Set on a Norwegian whaling station in South Georgia, an island 1200 km east of Antarctica, the book is based on the historical events of 1915, seen through the eyes of a young boy. The son of the station manager, he comes from a long tradition of whalers and knows no other way of life - harsh, cold and brutal. In the spring of that year the famous English explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton arrives on the Endurance, and the boy is fascinated by the scientists and adventurers and their preparation for the polar expedition. Bemused by their different priorities and intrigued by the possibility of another kind of life, he tries to stow away with them but is foiled. Instead he is there to witness Shackleton's extraordinary return and learn of the epic sea journey that saved the lives of his men. The brutality of whaling and the merciless slaughter of whales and seals is described through the eyes of a boy who can see that this is an unsustainable life, providing a poignant insight into another age and culture, as well as a stirring historical adventure story.
