Pepi is a Mexican walking fish who lives in an aquarium in the Muchos Viento restaurant. He knows that the Muchos Viento is somewhere in America, and he dreams of going to Mexico, 'The only home for me'.
The restaurant's owners, Tony and Lola, are deeply in debt. If they can't pay up, they will lose their restaurant to loan sharks. One night, as a result of a freak storm, Pepi finds that he can sing, and soon he becomes the restaurant's main attraction. People flock to see and hear him, and Tony and Lola start to make lots of money - but not enough to pay off their debt.
When the loan sharks come back, they make Tony and Lola an offer: they'll take either the restaurant or the amazing fish. Tony and Lola choose to keep Pepi and give away the restaurant, but Pepi won't allow it. He tells them he'll leave them and become a star. But Pepi has a plan. Once he is aboard his new owner's yacht, he announces that he won't sing unless he's taken to Mexico. Now he's in really big trouble...
